“SN HOUSE / Home with Converging Light” is positioned on the 12th floor of a tower mansion in Nagoya, Japan. This corner room offers expansive views through its continuous full-height glass windows, presenting a sense of openness that was its main attraction. Initially divided into three small rooms—a living room, dining room, and bedroom—the original layout failed to fully capitalize on its potential.
Our renovation plan involves the removal of partition walls wherever feasible, aiming to create a rich spatial experience through a minimalistic “convergence of light.” Vertical “light” elements in the corners of walls, combined with soft ambient light amplified by strategically placed mirrors, warmly envelop the living area. Additionally, “curtains” are used as flexible partition walls that gently separate and unite the space. These shape-retaining drapes catch and enhance the “light,” further elevating the quality of the spatial experience.
To enhance functionality and reinforce spatial continuity, doors to backspaces such as shoe closets and walk-in closets have been replaced with curtains that cover entire walls. Fixed walls are adorned with subtly textured tiles, creating a sophisticated atmosphere through the interplay of shadows with line lighting and ambient lighting. Custom-made furniture with sharp edges in a black base palette ensures a cohesive overall look, while strategically placed mirrors on walls and columns visually expand the space. Carefully selected foliage plants, matched to the ceiling height, add a refreshing touch of nature.
In the washroom, a sculptural washbasin takes center stage, flanked by vertical line lighting on both sides of the walls, accentuating a luxurious impression. The bathroom features 600mm square porcelain tiles of adequate thickness. Meticulous control over the positioning of joints and equipment, along with ceiling ambient lighting and narrow-angle downlights, creates an appropriate tension within the space.
Through these design methods, the “convergence of various qualities of light” introduces a comfortable contrast, crafting a timeless and enriched living environment. This project, “SN HOUSE / Home with Converging Light,” stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design, providing a sophisticated, serene, and elegant living experience.
