People Are Calling Out Home Design Trends That Scream “I’m A Republican,” And I Need To Know If You Agree
I asked the BuzzFeed Community to share the home design trends they feel are Republican-coded, and boy, did they deliver. Here’s what they said:
1. “Hobby Lobby decor — I’m talking 20-plus white wood signs with black writing that say things like ‘Live. Laugh. Love,’ their last name, town name, or ‘Hey sweet cheeks’ in their kids’ bathroom. Definitely Republican or at least grew up that way.”
—Anonymous, 33, Female, Oklahoma
“Bonus points for signs like ‘Don’t talk to me before my coffee’ or anything about being a ‘golf/hunting widow.'”
— Anonymous
2. “A wall covered in crosses.”
—Anonymous
3. “Heavy curtains and the ‘Italian Vineyard’ aesthetic of the early 2000s tend to skew right — still having that rustic Tuscan kitchen or other deep beige Tuscan-inspired decor is the mark of a boomer Republican household. Among younger demographics, I heavily associate the farmhouse aesthetic with conservatism. I don’t know any left-leaning people who are into Chip and Joanna Gaines, and people who are big fans all seem to be further to the right.”
“An excess of tchotchkes, signs, or other decor from HomeGoods or Target also seems conservative-coded.”

4. “Neatly framed staged-family photos on the walls — dad and all the boys are dressed in khakis and the same color button-downs, while mom and the girls are in matching pastel dresses. Even the babies have matching outfits.”

5. “Cherub anything.”

6. “Sliding barn doors inside the house for closets, bathrooms, and pantries.”

7. “You can tell before you even enter the house by checking out the yard. To me, a classic Republican yard is a green lawn (even in the desert) with a border of roses that are typically all the same color.”
Warner Bros. Pictures
“A liberal yard, to me, usually has a huge variety of colorful plants that are all growing mixed together in the same space, and almost never just a lawn. “
—Anonymous, 37, California
8. “Any sign that indicates what I should be doing in that room — ‘Relax,’ ‘Eat,’ and ‘Laundry’ signs are red flags that the owner wants to control me and my reproductive organs. “
—Anonymous, 43, Female, Los Angeles
9. “Minimalist houses that are overwhelmingly grayscale or white.”
—Anonymous
10. “I think of a gigantic clock on the wall. While it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re conservative, it’s more likely.”
“It is bad taste though.”

“I don’t know about other states, but in Montana, they seem to go with Republican political signs.”
—Anonymous, 39, Male, Montana
12. “A red, white, and blue color scheme, ‘Americana’ decor, stars everywhere. Now, I’m even seeing red, white, and blue Christmas decorations.”
“The signaling is strong!”
—Anonymous, 57, Female, Pennsylvania
13. “Cliché bible verse art, a sign that says ‘Bless this mess’ or anything that says ‘Blessed,’ and ornate crosses mixed in with family photos on a wall.”
“Definitely Republican or at least grew up that way.”
—Anonymous, 44, Female, Tennessee
“Any advertisement of their Christian faith — the more there is, the redder they vote.”
— Abby, 42
14. “A massive chandelier in the hallway.”
—Anonymous, 72, Portland, OR
15. “The family tree photo frames and anything farmhouse — think shiplap or white distressed wood. If they’re rich, they’ll have more classy items than the Hobby Lobby or Dollar General home decor. I think you’ll find Rae Dunn, leather couches, horse metal decor, and no color.”
—Anonymous, 25, Female, Missouri

21. “Definitely the American flag or a flag pole outside. The bigger flag just lets me know they’re probably insufferable.”
—silverchair815
22. “Hunting trophies or taxidermy on the wall. Not to mention any defiant signage about how much they love their right to own guns.”

—etconner
23. “Anything NASCAR.”

25. “Some sort of decor (usually a wooden sign written in cursive) that has a saying about how special and sacred family is — I guarantee that family has a queer child who doesn’t talk to them anymore.”
—Anonymous, 33, Non-binary, Iowa
26. “There’s a Cricut-made Bible verse about love on the wall in the primary bedroom.”
—chisti
27. “Confederate flags and anything ‘blue lives matter’ or with the thin blue line is a dead giveaway that someone’s conservative. So is military regalia or flags if no one in the house served.”

28. “Maximalist decor, but in the most basic, generic kind of way.”
—Anonymous
29. And finally: “Any display of cotton as a decoration. Like seriously?!”
